It starts with an empty space. A pristine white dance floor as a base from which Martin Del Amo shares his thoughts and experiences of fear, danger and loneliness.
It is performed at the new CarriageWorks in Redfern – a new space which mixes contemporary architecture with the derelict icon all Sydney-siders are used to seeing as they pull into Redfern station – the Eveleigh Carriage Workshop and the Blacksmiths’ Shop. Finally, Sydney can be proud to host local and international performance in this brand new world-class venue.
The stark ambiance at the beginning of Del Amo’s performance is slowly broken down with clean lines and frankly told stories together with his articulate movements.
He shares anecdotes from his life such as his childhood playtime when he frolicked with other children in the common area of his family’s apartment block. Del Amo explores the balance between parental intention and the childhood need for discovery and pushing the boundaries of danger.
Del Amo moves within the space with childlike energy. He is free and light and clearly communicates the emotions that are attached to the stories and their messages.
He uses ordinary sound equipment with intention to map out his journey. He somehow breaths life into these inanimate objects.
Gail Priest’s live, electronica, sound compositions are cleanly meshed with Del Amo’s performance and supports the fear and danger expressed in his stories and movements.
The performance is rounded off by presenting us, the audience, with the same view as we experienced upon entering the space, yet we are changed in some way – more aware of the danger and fear we feel when presented with an empty space.
